Anatomy: The Renal Pelvis |
|
| At this point, clarification concerning terminology is necessary. In the kidney with many papillae, such as human kidney, each papilla is surrounded by a funnel shaped calyx. |
Multiple Papillae |
| This corresponds to what we call the pelvis in the kidney with only one papilla. |
One Papilla |
| In the human kidney, the compartment between the calyces and the ureter is called the pelvis. |
Pelvis in the Multi-papillate Kidney |
| This compartment is not present in kidneys with one papilla. Here, the pelvis is a direct extension of the ureter. In cross sections of such mammalian kidneys, the pelvis appears to surround the inner medulla only and to have a simple funnel shape. |
