About the APS Archive/FAQs

Graduate and professional education in life sciences is undergoing tremendous change. The student population demographics have changed dramatically over the past decade. Curricular content continues to expand exponentially. The teaching methods traditionally used in the past are quickly giving way to more student-centered methods, such as problem-based learning. In addition, multimedia formats play an increasingly important role in all forums, both in campus-based classes and online courses.

The APS Archive - Addressing the Changing Needs of Graduate and Professional Educators

Welcome to the APS Archive of Teaching Resources!  The APS Archive was designed to be a colleague-to-colleague sharing site where APS members and others can submit learning objects they have developed to enhance their own teaching. The Archive is a searchable database that anyone can use to located materials on a particular topic or of a particular type. A bulletin board is attached to each submission and will contain the initial reviews and any comments users may want to attach as well as a usefulness rating. In addition, links are provided from all graduate/professional material to the relevant Medical Objective(s). We hope you will bookmark this page and return often.

What will I find here?

In the Archive you will not only find labs, lessons, graphics, animations, and web sites that can enhance the content in your courses (See the “Search the Archive” section above), but you will also be challenged to examine how you teach, with suggested offerings both in the “Explore Effective Pedagogy” section and linked to the learning objects you view. The Archive also serves as an entry point to the APS Careers web site, offering career resources for students and educators at each grade/age level. Finally, you are invited to share resources with your colleagues by submitting learning objects and web links to be added to the Archive; please note that the copyright for original material remains with the author. Of course, feel free to contact us at any time with questions or suggestions by clicking on the link at the top right of each screen.

What is a Learning Object?

A Learning Object is anything that will help you enhance your teaching, such as

  • Syllabi
  • PowerPoint presentations
  • Articles explaining different teaching methods
  • Curriculum development guidelines
  • Simulations
  • Graphics
  • Web sites

How are the Learning Objects Reviewed?

A scientific review board reviews the scientific accuracy of the submitted materials and to verify that any use of humans or animals was according to APS guidelines.
